Andy Mukherjee, Bloomberg wrote about potential “Amazonian emptiness” due to effect from consumer shopping behavioral shift from brick-and-mortar to online stores (Bloomberg, 23 Oct 2017). This was based on several observations, (1) closure of big retail (e.g. John Little) in Jan 2017, (2) entry of Amazon in Jul 2017, (3) downward trend of rent despite full occupancy of retail space, (4) reduced sales profit in some retailers, (5) reduced space requirement for biz, e.g. fintech.
