Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare (5 Dec 2018)

AI will be used in healthcare to spot problems earlier so as to prevent illness or medical problems.

AI can help to alleviate the following challenges:

  • Shortage of healthcare staffs
  • Higher costs
  • ‘Archaic’ medical treatments unsupportive of today’s demand
  • Immense data related to healthcare processes collected over time
  • Data crushing to look for patterns and predictions in a fast and effective manner
  • Remote access to monitor patients’ vital signs in hospitals or elsewhere, e.g. heart rate and blood pressure.

Dr Loke Wai Chiong, Delloite SouthEast Asia’s Health Care Sector Leader attribute rising cost to

  • demographic change (i.e. aging population)
  • More chronic disease population

Healthcare expenditure in Singapore is projected to achieve usd 12 bil (sgd 16.4 bil) in 2020 from usd 9 bil in 2015.

One area of innovation is to develop apps that helps caregivers and hospitals to improve care for patients.
