Web analytics

It is a web performance measurement. It collects, analyze and report web usage as a performance measure.

Metrics

  • Client requests (or hits), early 90s
  • Page views and sessions, mid 90s
    • Page views is request made for a page
    • Session is a sequence of request by the uniquely identified visitor over time. This is terminated automatically when there is no activity for 30 min.
    • It is challenging to filter requests made by spiders, proxies, browsers’ caching, and dynamically assigned IP.
    • Web bugs, cookies, Ajax (intermediate agent),
  • There is no harmonized system to define metrics. Main players are Interactive Advertising Bureau, IAB, Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards, JICWEBS, and Digital Analytics Association, DAA.

Universal Analytics, UA

  • Data collection. More ways to collect data. It can integrate data across devices/platforms.
  • Data processing. It is based on unique visitor.
  • Customizable performance metrics.
  • UI. Intuitive.
  • Flexible tracking code. There are 3 versions, i.e. gtag.js for websites, Analytics SDKs for mobile, and Measurement Protocol for others (ref. 2)
  • Competency in UA is required.
  • UA user must ensure personal data protection is adhered.

There are two options for WordAds, i.e. normal and VIP (or Enterprise version). The latter allows you to run your own ads. You need to find advertisers.
